What Fashion Trends for Women are Coming Back to Australia This Summer 2024

It's time to put away the warm woollies and bring out your favorite summer dresses, skirts, and tops. If you got tired of your summer clothes toward the end of last summer, we have some ideas for exciting new fashion trends that will breathe new life into your wardrobe this summer. And you can shop for most of them right here on Local Threads, the largest marketplace for ethical fashion from Australia's best independent brands.

The Biggest 8 Fashion Trends in Spring 2024

1. Pleats

Pleats are big news this summer. Pleated midi skirts have been seen on the runways of major designers like Michael Kors and Lacoste worn by models and on the streets worn by celebrities. Pleats and more pleats have become a major fashion trend among celebrities and influencers.

Accordion pleat midi skirts come in all colors and some are even patterned. What to wear with them has always been a bit of an issue, but these days anything goes.

Pro tip: Wear yours with a cardigan, a sweater, or even a blazer like we've seen many do this season.

For a more coordinated look, you can wear your pleated skirt with a sweater or top in the same color range and finish the style with carefully a chosen purse and shoes. Consider platforms; they are huge (literally and figuratively) this season. Get yours from Belle & Bloom on Local Threads

2. Pantsuits

Pantsuits are in for spring/summer. And this time around, they come in solid, bold colors. Ladies have a wide range to choose from. There are suits with oversized jackets and padded shoulders, as shown on the runways by Stella McCartney and Christian Siriano. Or you can go for a softer, less structured look in a material that drapes well.

The colors are full-bodies yellow, acid pink, deep orange, and cobalt blue. For a more subdued look, you can go for a soft pink, stone, or lilac.

3. Sheer Fabrics

The craze for sheer fabrics is still with us. Sheer dresses are not just for the red carpet and celebrities attending gala events. Dresses, skirts, and tops in sheer fabrics are making their appearance everywhere.

This trend is probably more popular with the more daring and confident among women, but it can also work for the woman who wants to look feminine, but doesn't want to reveal everything when she's out this festive season. With some creativity, anyone can wear this trend with success. For instance, a see-through dress can be worn with a lacy cardigan or singlet. For an ultra-feminine look, wear a tight-fitting pastel dress underneath a sheer one.

4. Romantic Florals

However much we love our jeans and t-shirts, there's nothing like a long, floral dress to make a woman feel womanly.

Florals featured prominently on the runways of New York, Milan, Paris, and London and they are big in Australia this summer. As with the pantsuits, women can choose soft, romantic interpretations of this trend, or they can go for the bolder look.

Florals, when used for long flowing maxi dresses are the ultimate in romantic dressing.  Florals have always been popular for spring and summer, and this year is no exception.

Local Threads has you covered. Check out the lovely dresses from our partner brands, including Belle & Bloom, Matea, Designs, Zoha Online, Lakeyo, and Ileanathelabel.

5. Cutouts

Cutouts have been in fashion for a while now, but we are not finished with them yet. At recent fashion shows in Europe, cutouts appeared on the front and sides of dresses and along the side panels of pants.

Fashion pundits predict that they will stay with us for a while still. So, if you haven't invested in a dress featuring strategic cutouts, it's not too late.

Have a look at what Local Threads has on offer from brands like Belle & Bloom, Lakeyo, and Growing Fond.

6. Striped Shirts

Striped shirts are one of the hottest fashion trends for summer here in Australia. Made from cotton and linen, these shirts will keep you cool in the heat of the Australian summer.

The best thing about striped shirts is their versatility. You can wear them with denims and sneakers for a casual look, or pair them with plain-colored leggings and white sneakers for a great beach look. If you're off to the office, wear your shirt with a pencil skirt and heeled sandals.

It's easy to see how this can become a summer staple that could be resurrected as soon as the weather warms after the coming winter.

7. Gingham

In Australia, gingham is making a big splash this summer. Always looking fresh, gingham can be girlish or stylish, depending on the color and style of the garment.

Since midi skirts are also in this summer, combine the two trends and get yourself a midi skirt in gingham. A black and white gingham midi with black kitten shoes will turn heads in your direction.

Or go for a white and yellow dress and high heels. Whatever, you can't go wrong with gingham.

8. Basket Bags

Basket bags first made their appearance in 1950, and ever since, whether they were a high fashion trend or not, basket bags have always had a steady following. Through the years, you could always see women, young and old holding onto a favored bag woven from some natural material.

They are making a comeback because they fit in perfectly with the current popularity of products made from natural, sustainable materials.

Being made from natural materials like grass and rope, they tend to come in tones that go well with most colors. It's common for these kinds of bags to be quite big, so they can double up as beach bags as well.
